Jerzy Browkin
On 23 November 2015 (aged 81), Professor Jerzy Browkin died in Warsaw. He was a retired academic
from the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Mechanics at Warsaw University
and the Mathematical Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and a prominent specialist
in the field of algebraic number theory.
Professor Browkin was born on November 5, 1934. In 1952, he graduated from Warsaw VI High
School, Tadeusz Reytan. In the senior year (1952 year) he was awarded first place in the third
Mathematical Olympiad. In the same year he began studying mathematics at the University of Warsaw,
from which he graduated in 1956 obtaining master's degree. He wrote his doctoral thesis under the
direction of Professor Waclaw Sierpinski. On 10 July 1987 he was granted the title of professor
of mathematical sciences.
Professor Browkin's research interests focused on algebraic number theory. In 1994, together
with Juliusz Brzezinski, they formulated the n-hypothesis, generalization ABC-hypothesis integers
n ≥ 3.
Professor Browkin for decades (1955-2007) worked at the University of Warsaw, where in 1987-1990 he served as dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Mechanics. In the years 2007-2015
he was employed at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and was Member of the Central Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles. He was a reviewer of many doctoral theses and
dissertations.
Professor Browkin remains in the memory of students as an excellent lecturer, characterized by
extraordinary precision and clarity of expression. He was author of several monographs and
academic textbooks that helped many generations of students of mathematics in learning algebra.
Also close to his heart were his efforts with schoolchildren in Mathematical Olympiad competitions. He published two collections of mathematical Olympiad problems.
